Kanjani8 Celebrates 880,000 Movie-Goers for “EIGHT RANGER”

On Aug 31st, 34 days since Kanjani8‘s 8th year anniversary movie “EIGHT RANGER” was shown in cinemas, it was able to breakthrough 880,000 cinema-goers.

Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, “EIGHT RANGER” was originally a skit performed during Kanjani8′s concerts. When it opened in last July 28th at 155 cinemas nationwide, the movie was able to attract 122,160 movie-goers that earned them JPY 157,836,200 million  in box office proceeds during the weekend opening.

The movie was able to attract more audience during the “Ladies Day” weekdays, and while most movie-goers are females, parents and children can also be seen since the movie is a hero-themed. Furthermore, it was regarded as a summer vacation movie so it was able to attract different age range.

To commemorate the immobilization of 880,000 audience, fans can get their EIGHT RANGERemoji/pictograms until Sept 28th. The emojis are for FREE and can be downloaded to any smartphone via EIGHT RANGER official movie site.

The emoji feature each ranger with “BLACK who decides action splendidly”, “RED drinks a beer”, “VIOLET with his sparkling vampire tooth” , “ORANGE says ‘yas san’ ” , “BLUE lovey-dovey blue” , “YELLOW sings 1 FOR ALL, ALL FOR 1″ , and “GREEN  respectfully walks with the dog Don Saigou”.

Kanjani 8’s Okura Tadayoshi & Kiritani Mirei to star in new movie

On August 15th, it was announced that Kanjani 8 member Okura Tadayoshi (27) will be starring in the new movie “100-kai Naku Koto” (directed by Hiroki Ryuichi) with Kiritani Mirei (22).

This will mark Okura’s third movie after “Ooku” (2010) and “Eight Ranger” (now showing), which featured Kanjani 8 in the lead roles as a group. However, this will be the first time for Okura to play the lead role alone.

“100-kai Naku Koto” is based on Nakamura Kou’s novel of the same name. The plot revolves around the sad love story of the protagonist ‘Fujii’ (Okura), whose lover is going through cancer. In the movie, ‘Fujii’ will be revealed to have lost a part of his memory due to a motorcycle accident four years ago.

Okura commented, “Reading the script and the original novel made me think about true love. I would like to express the protagonist’s subtle changes in his heart and his emotional conflict.”

Kiritani, who will be play the heroine ‘Yoshimi’, also made a comment, “Her face of struggling desperately against the illness, the scrupulous face of being deeply in love with him, or the cute face when she is with him…  I hope that I could show the character’s charms through a screen.”

Filming will begin at the end of this month, and the movie is scheduled to be released in 2013.

Kanjani8’s latest single sells over 330,000 copies

On July 25th, Kanjani8 released their latest single, “ER“, under the name Eight Ranger. This single has sold over 330,000 copies in its first week, topping Oricon’s single charts for the week of August 6th!

“ER” serves as the theme song for Kanjani8’s starring film, ‘Eight Ranger‘, which recently opened in theaters on July 28th. The first week sales for this single has exceeded “BANDAGE” (211,000 copies), which was released under the name LANDS as the theme song for Akanishi Jin’s starring movie, ‘BANDAGE‘.

This marks Kanjani8’s 10th consecutive single/album to top the Oricon charts. It’s also their first time in 3 years and 9 months to sell over 300,000 copies in the first week. Their last was “Musekinin Hero” back in October of 2008 (348,000 copies).

Kanjani8 is scheduled to hold a free event called ‘Matsubara Shinichi presents Sugohachi‘ on August 8th at Kyocera Dome. They will also hold their 8th anniversary event, ‘8 Matsuri ~Bokura mo 8cchai, 8cchake Matsuri~‘ , on August 4th and 5th at Makuhari Messe and from the 10th to the 12th at Intex Osaka.
